Characteristics of Axle
- The wheel and axle must be put together and rotate about a common axis.
- It is a small circular metal object. It attaches the wheel to the object it is moving.
- To protect the axle it can be enclosed in a housing.
- Axle may be fixed in position with a bearing or bushing sitting inside the hole in the wheel or gear so that the wheel or gear can rotate around the axle.
- In other cases, the wheel or gear may be fixed to the axle, with bearings or bushings provided at the mounting points where the axle is supported.
- Motorcycle axle maintains the position of the wheels, relative to each other and to the vehicle body.
- Axle has to bear the weight of the vehicle because the wheel is the only part of the vehicle which is touching the ground.
- Axle can also help to serve the purpose of driving, braking and steering.
Some of the materials used for making axle are:
- Aluminum
- Carbon fiber
- Magnesium
- Steel
