Axle

The motorcycle axle is a small wheel which is attached to a bigger wheel to work together. It is a central shaft for a rotating wheel or gear.

Characteristics of Axle

• The wheel and axle must be put together and rotate about a common axis.
• It is a small circular metal object. It attaches the wheel to the object it is moving.
• To protect the wheel axle it can be enclosed in a housing.
• Moorcycle axle may be fixed in position with a bearing or bushing sitting inside the hole in the wheel or gear so that the wheel or gear can rotate around the axle.
• In other cases, the wheel or gear may be fixed to the axle, with bearings or bushings provided at the mounting points where the axle is supported.

Functions of Axle

• Motorcycle axle maintains the position of the wheels, relative to each other and to the vehicle body.
• Axle has to bear the weight of the vehicle because the wheel is the only part of the vehicle which is touching the ground.
• Axle can also help to serve the purpose of driving, braking and steering.
