Types of Brake Lining
Brake lining can be divided into types:
- Woven
- Molded
The quality of a brake lining is important for the efficient working of brakes. Some important features which a good auto brake lining should have are:
- Auto brake linings should be able to resist high temperatures.
- They should have high friction quality.
- They should be quiet during applications.
- They should be easily replaceable
Brake lining is that part of a brake pad which is responsible for converting the kinetic energy of the vehicle into heat, so the materials from which brake linings are made should be capable of withstanding high temperatures and at the same time have high friction. Some of the most common materials used for making brake linen are:
- Organic: These type of linings come with very few metal fibers. They can transfer heat very well. They are quiet during application. They are made from filler materials and high temperature resins.
- Metallic: These linings are made of high metal composition. They operate at high temperatures.
- Semi-metallic: The composition of these linings contain some metal particles. Their wearing properties are good and do not make noise during application.
- Auto brake lining need to be changed regularly to protect the rotor or drum, usually a squeak or screeching sound is the warning sound that the linings need to be changed.
- The linings can get spoiled from oil or from the leaked brake fluid, in such a case, the source should be repaired and the lining should be changed.
