Catalytic Converter

Catalytic Converter
When the vehicle engine burns fuel, it produces gases which are high in toxin. A catalytic converter is a device used to reduce the toxicity of the exhausts.

Types of Catalytic Converter
There are two main types of structures used in catalytic converters:
  • Honeycomb
  • Ceramic Beads
Characteristics of Catalytic Converter
  • It is situated between the exhaust manifold and the silencer.
  • There is an oxygen sensor mounted in front of the catalytic converter.
  • Most catalytic converters have precious metals contained in their lining such as platinum, aluminum oxide and palladium which transform harmful gases into non-toxic materials.
Functions of Catalytic Converter
  • Reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen
  • Oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide
  • Oxidation of unburnt non-methane hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water
Maintenance of Catalytic Converter
  • The converter body and end tubes should be checked periodically to see if they are broken or rusted.
  • It should be checked for a rattle, if it does not rattle, the pellets may have melted together or fallen out.
