Types of Automotive Catalytic Converter
There are two main types of structures used in catalytic converters:
- Honeycomb
- Ceramic Beads
- It is situated between the exhaust manifold and the silencer.
- There is an oxygen sensor mounted in front of the catalytic converter.
- Most catalytic converters have precious metals contained in their lining such as platinum, aluminum oxide and palladium which transform harmful gases into non-toxic materials.
- Reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen
- Oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide
- Oxidation of unburnt non-methane hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water
- The converter body and end tubes should be checked periodically to see if they are broken or rusted.
- It should be checked for a rattle, if it does not rattle, the pellets may have melted together or fallen out.
