Types of Chains
There are two main types of chains:
- O-Ring Chains: They have small O-Rings built into them and are used to keep grease and lube inside the chain.
- Non-O-Ring Chains: Non-O-Ring chains do not have the O-rings.
The main function of chains in two-wheeler is to transfer power from the transmission to the rear wheel. The O-Ring Chain keeps lubrication inside.
Materials used for making Chains
Some of the most common materials used for making chains for two-wheelers are:
- Stainless Steel
- Cast Iron
- Aluminum
Maintenance of chains in two-wheelers are necessary to provide less drag. A dry, squeaking, rusty chain will tear its way through the aluminum motor and will always result in engine damage. Lubrication is the most important care of chains.
- Lubrication: They should be lubed after every 500 miles of riding. For O-ring chains, lubing should be done while the chain is still warm, after riding. Lubing should be done in two places, one at the inside of the chain and directly onto the O-rings.
- Cleaning: Chains should be cleaned preferably at every oil change. Harsh solvents should not be used for that purpose. Kerosene is ideal for cleaning chains.
