Head Gaskets
A Gasket is a mechanical seal between two objects, generally for the purpose of preventing leakage between the two objects while under compression.

Low friction coatings is used to prevent gaskets from sticking to either surface, allowing the head to expand and contract without tearing the gasket apart. But in cast iron engines, sealing beads are applied to the face of the gasket to form a good cold seal and maintain the seal by holding the gasket firmly in place.

Characteristics of Gaskets
  • Gaskets are available in sets
  • Gaskets come in different thickness
Types of Gaskets
Some of the most important gaskets used in two-wheeler are:
  • Exhaust Gaskets
  • Base Gaskets
  • Head Gaskets
  • Valve Guide Seals
  • Tensioner Gaskets
In a two wheeler, the head gasket is one of the most important part of its engine. It seals all of the combustion chambers as well as the coolant and oil channels between the head and block. When the head gasket fails, coolant can enter the cylinder and it will turn to vapor as the engine fires. Most often, the head gaskets fail after the engine has experienced an overheating situation.

Maintenance of Head Gasket
  • Belts and hoses should be checked regularly, most preferably at every oil change.
  • Check for coolant leaks underneath the vehicle.
  • The seal of the radiator should be checked.
  • The coolant system should be flushed every 5 years to get all the corrosion out of the system.
