Gear Oil

Gear oil is a motor oil used for the lubricating the gear. It is of high viscosity so that it can protect the gear parts and distribute the oil throughout the gear system. Viscosity is the most important property of gear oil.

Benefits of Using Gear Oil

• It carries heat away from the moving engine parts.
• It cleans and prevents corrosion.
• It decreases wear and tear by providing a film and avoiding friction between two surface parts.
• It minimize oil oxidation and prevent foaming.
• It separates water readily.

Characteristics of Gear Oil

• Gear oil is heavy oil, with 80 to 100 weight viscosity.
• Gear oil usually have a strong sulfur smell. They should not be inhaled and contact with skin should be avoided.
• The major source of gear oil is petroleum.
• Gear oil should be able to withstand the increased temperature.
• Gear oil has good water separation properties.
• Gear oil need to be stored at moderate temperature, away from contamination.

Types of Gear Oil
There are two major types of Gear oil :

• Synthetic Gear Oil
• Mineral Gear Oil

The synthetic oil is superior than mineral oil, can resist heat better, have higher film strength and added lubricity.
