Odometer
An motorcycle odometer records the distance that a vehicle travels. It is one of the oldest instruments still in use. It translates the rotations of the wheels into the distance traveled by the vehicle. It shows the total mileage logged by the vehicle. Motorcycle odometer can also show a trip mileage recorder that can be reset at the beginning of a journey.
Types of Motorcycle Odometers
Odometers are of two types. They are:
  • Mechanical Odometer
  • Digital Odometer
How Odometer Works
Mechanical odometers are very simple and operated by a flexible cable made from a tightly wound spring. The cable goes its way up to the instrument panel, where it is connected to the input shaft of the odometer. Digital odometers are replacing the mechanical ones because it cost less and have more features.

Maintenance of Motorcycle Odometer
  • For an accurate result of the speedometer, it is important to use the same tire, wheel size and gearing during modifications or part changing.
  • Generally, if the odometer gives an error of more than five percent, it should be fixed.
  • The numbers in an odometer should be lined up in order.
  • They should be lubricated periodically.
