Radiator

Engine Radiator
The Radiator is a device used to disperse the heat which the coolant has absorbed from the engine. In automobiles with an internal combustion engine, a radiator is connected to channels running through the engine and cylinder head, through which is pumped a mixture of water with ethylene glycol.

Characteristics of Radiator
Some of the most important characteristics of Engine Radiators are:
  • It has a vertical- or horizontal-finned tubing section connected between two tanks.
  • It has a cap which not only cover the opening of the radiator but whose valve helps to keep the right pressure in the engine radiator.
  • It can hold a large amount of water in tubes or passages which give a large area in contact with the atmosphere.
  • It has a small fan attached to it which is controlled by a thermostat. In most cases, this fan prevents the engine from overheating.
  • It is mounted behind the vehicle's grille.
Materials used for making Radiators
Aluminum is the most commonly used material for making engine radiator. In older models, the radiators can be of brass.

Functions of Radiator
The main function is to disperse the heat which was absorbed from the engine by the coolant. It also gives the engine a long life.

Maintenance of Radiators
  • The levels in radiators and overflow tanks should be checked regularly. It should be done only when the engine is cold.
  • Regular check for possible damage and blockage by insects, vegetation etc. is a must.
  • The failed thermostat should be replaced immediately.
